My wife, Dorothy (Dot), and I became a part of the Avondale family in May of 1957. Being a small congregation at that time we both filled many roles as the congregation grew. After serving as a deacon for a brief time I was appointed an elder. We formerly worshiped at Moreland Avenue, the congregation that started Avondale. In 1965 I was privileged to be a part of the eldership that sponsored and conducted Atlanta’s first "Area Wide" Gospel Meeting, which brought congregations from throughout this region together. The Atlanta City Auditorium was filled each night. I was on the original board of Georgia AGAPE and served during its formative years.

Dot and I have been married 61 years. We have three children, Marsha, Mike and Mark. Marsha has three children and worships here at Avondale. Mike is married to Vicki and they have three children. Mark is married to Rhonda and they have two children. They worship at Snellville. At the time of this writing we have eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

After graduating from high school, I worked for Otis Elevator Company for four and a half years. I then worked as a paving and underground pipe line contractor for Concrete Construction Company for fifty years until the time of my retirement.

We became a part of the Avondale congregation after we moved to Atlanta from Charlotte, NC in the spring of 1978. I began teaching an adult Bible class within the first six months and have taught an adult class each Sunday almost continuously since that time. Sue began teaching the cradle roll class soon after our arrival at Avondale and taught for over 25 years. I became a deacon in 1979 and served in that capacity until I was appointed an elder May 3, 1985.

I married Sue Shepherd on October 29, 1965. We have four natural children: Julie, Jamey, Josh, and Jed; and two adopted special needs children: J.J. and Joyce Heather-Jane. Julie Hixson-Wallace is married to Ralph Wallace and worships at Westside in Searcy, AR; Jamey is married to Alison, worships at Avondale, and they have three children; Josh is married to Annette, worships at La Vergne near Nashville, TN, and they have two children; Jed is married to Carolyn, worships at Avondale, and they have two children. J.J. resides at Rainbow Omega, and Heather lives with us.

Sue is a retired nurse, and I will complete my 40th year with Olin in July 2008 as a chemical engineer. We have worked with Georgia Agape as both foster and adoptive parents and now work with the Atlanta Dinner Committee for Rainbow Omega.
